Design Camp: Creative Coding + Open Source
September 19, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
FreeJoin DCC alum Caroline D. (Mu) for this two-day Design Camp.
In this workshop, Caroline will introduce students to several different softwares/techniques such as glitch art with Notepad++, making music/sound art with Hydra, and navigating GitHub via interactive demos. Then, she will provide a thorough orientation to learning new softwares/tools to express creativity through remix and open source culture.
When proposing this Design Camp, Caroline wrote: “I put together the idea for this workshop during my semester researching remix as part of HDCC379 and I want to share some of the theory, history, and practices I’ve learned. As an Immersive Media Design student, we are asked to learn unfamiliar technologies for every class, but I’ve noticed that a lot of us feel that we’re being thrown into the deep end and just expected to figure it out on our own. I expect that students in other majors feel that way too, and I think a workshop like what I have in mind would have been helpful for me when I was first learning about creative coding and open source. I think my workshop is relevant to DCC because DCC asks us to learn a lot of new technology, but also because beyond the technique we examine the cultures and communities shaping the technology we use. Remix and open source culture disrupts the status quo of who is ‘allowed to be’ an artist, a musician, a developer, a professional and I want to share this empowerment with fellow DCC students.”
No existing knowledge is required for this workshop.
Students should expect to prepare their computer for this workshop by downloading Notepad++.
All students who complete this two-day Design Camp will earn 200 points for their DCC Family.
