Sophomore Course

This course focuses on the acquisition of practical and theoretical skills central to using sound as an artistic medium. Through technical demonstrations, individual projects, assigned readings, and class discussions, students will develop and extend their understanding of sound as a mode of expression, learn the historical/cultural significance of the medium, and discuss the work of a variety of artists. The course will emphasize critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills, moving beyond the technical applications of software. Students will engage in work in various genres and focus on integrating sound with other media. This course will introduce the basics of sound recording, and mixing as well as the creative applications of sound used for screen-based practices, electronic arts, and immersive and installation art.
