Sarah C. Harvey, "Sustainable Interdisciplinary Fashion Venture"

This project provides a glimpse at what a sustainable and ethical fashion line could look like through the use of natural and reclaimed materials to create clothing and accessories, as well as through a website with a blog whose purpose is to educate middle class American consumers on the environmental degradation and human rights abuses typically caused by the fast fashion industry. I demonstrate alternatives to toxic fabric dyes usually used and released in the industrial production of clothing, design some unique and practical fashion pieces, and explore a possible alternative business model that is more ethical, sustainable, and fair to workers and communities around the globe. The blog portion of this project considers the impact of the entire industrial process of fast fashion products, from “cradle to grave,” and places an emphasis on individuals putting pressure on companies and policy makers as opposed to just changing individual lifestyle or buying habits.
